With more than 80 golf courses, Tasmania has more golf courses per capita than anywhere else in Australia. Two in particular merit day trips from Launceston, and an exciting development is set to open soon. Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links is one hour’s drive north-east of Launceston, near Bridport, and is Australia’s #1 public golf course. Designed by Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, it features 18 spectacular holes through towering dunes along Bass Strait, and is widely acclaimed as one of the nation’s finest golf courses. Whether for a quick round in a day or an indulgent weekend, the course also offers a golf shop, bar, meals and beach cottages. If your partner is playing and you’re not, a visit to the northeast wineries is a civilised alternative: Jansz, Pipers Brook, Dalrymple, Bay of Fires, Brook Eden and Delamere are all within easy reach of Barnbougle. Click here to view the Tamar Valley Wine Route Map Craggy Peaks is the former Ben Lomond Golf Course now transformed into a course catering for all levels of players by course designer and champion golfer Bob Shearer. Golf holes are framed by native bushland and intersected by streams, and the luxury cabins, positioned right on the golf course, have all amenities. At the end of a long day on the course, visit the fully licensed restaurant serving fine cuisine and the best of Tasmanian produce. Greens Beach Golf Course on the West Tamar is undergoing a Peter Thompson re-design, with the18-hole, sand-belt Links course, in the style of St Andrews in Scotland, set to open this year. Closer to Launceston are the Country Club Resort (a challenging championship course with plenty of hazards to test your golf handicap, plus resort facilities for partners not partaking in golf), and Launceston Golf Course, Tasmania’s oldest 18 hole course, surrounded by natural bushland, and with fabulous views from the clubhouse.
