Tasmania

Launceston Tamar Valley is made for losing yourself - in exploration, romance and adventure, by land, air, river or sea. Its relationship to northern Tasmania is like that of London's to Europe: a rich and scenic place to arrive, then use as home base. Only the proportions are different – and that’s the whole point.

Launceston is just a 45-minute flight or a relaxing overnight cruise from Melbourne, and a 95-minute flight from Sydney. There are four daily flights from Melbourne during the week and two on weekends. Flights connect with other major centres. Bass Strait is the sea-road to Tasmania. Spirit of Tasmania I and II cruise regularly from Port Melbourne (Victoria) to Devonport (Tasmania) all year round. There is a sailing every night in both directions and, during high demand periods, daytime sailings as well. Both ships are vehicular ferries, so you can bring your car and/or caravan, or motorbike. Devonport is 95 kms from Launceston and can be reached in about an hour

Launceston airport is just 15 minutes drive from the City, and you can do a lap of the Tamar Valley Wine Route in 3 ½ hours. That's without stopping, of course, but you wouldn’t want to do that - in Tasmania, stopping reminds you of all the good things in life. And if you don't bring your own car, you can hire: from a VW beetle to an Alfa Romeo. Or maybe you’d prefer to go by bicycle?

Or, consider joining a wine or cycling tour of the valley - with transport included. Check our 'What to Do' section or ask the Visitor Centre for more details: click here
