Discover Launceston Tamar Valley by cycling, skating or rollerblading along one of the city’s many trails. First, hire a bike in the city from On Your Bike at Mountain Designs or Rent-a-Cycle. For a different type of adventure on two wheels, hire an eco-friendly battery powered chopper bicycle or scooter from Ecoride, in the centre of Launceston and navigate the city and surrounds in style. Pick up a copy of Launceston City Council’s Guide to Launceston’s Trails (available from the Launceston Travel and Information Centre), a guide for all ages describing 24 trails, each with separate map and picture, ranging from 500 metres to 4kms. If you want to take your bike off the beaten track, a number of Forest Reserves offer rugged and challenging trails, although mountain biking trails in the State are mostly unmapped and unpublished. In and around Launceston, mountain bike facilities are located at Heritage Forest, Torrens St Peoples Park and the Lilydale Recreation Ground, and cross country and single track mountain bike riding may be enjoyed at Hollybank Forest, Trevallyn Reserve, and Youngtown Regional Park. On your Bike! is a Launceston based tour guiding company, catering specifically to the mountain bike market, offering a range of tours using Avanti bikes equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. The Ben Lomond Mountain Bike Descent Tour is mostly downhill; guides take you on a 1050 vertical metre descent, starting in the Alpine Village of Ben Lomond. Track down the spectacular Jacobs Ladder road before connecting to old 4WD tracks through eucalypt forests, finishing on the Blessington Road at 400m. If you only have a few hours and want to explore some of Launceston's most popular tracks, there’s the Trevallyn Reserve Tour, skirting the edge of the Cataract Gorge, along fire trails and fun single-track sections via the West Tamar River trail, or the North Esk River Tour navigating Launceston’s water-front atmosphere. All tours start and finish at Mountain Designs in the centre of Launceston. For more laid-back cycling options, Tasmanian Expeditions offer weekend cycling tours of the Tamar and its historic towns, including fine food, wine and heritage accommodation. And there are also excellent bicycle touring options in the Great Western Tiers, an area of outstanding natural beauty west of Launceston. Click here for further information & bookings
