Low Head is a classified historic town and a popular holiday resort 5km north of George Town.  The rich maritime heritage of the Tamar Valley is evident in the present lighthouse (built in 1888), which gives magnificent views of the Tamar River. The Pilot Station, established in 1805, is the oldest operating in Australia and houses a Maritime Museum (open 7 days a week) and cafe. A coastal walk leads to a small beach where penguins come ashore at nightfall (guided tours are available nightly). The two main beaches are East Beach on Bass Strait and the quieter and safer Lagoon Bay on the estuary. Picnic areas with electric barbecues feature near both beaches. Colonial accommodation is available, and there is a caravan park conveniently located in the area. Take advantage of several launching ramps (including a harbour built in the Cornish style at the Pilot Station), and the superb dive spots off Barrell Rock, which includes a cool temperate reef. Many people suggest that this is one of the best shore dives due to the deep drop off from the reefs. The dive is challenging and it is only recommended for experienced divers who are with someone that knows the local conditions.
